The name Peter is derived from the words "Peat" and "Eater". It is an ancient Gaelic name resulting from the time when the Romans were overunning Gaeland (pronounced gay-land) During this time, the Gaes were forced to eat the only available source of nourishment: peat. As this terrible food was considered inedible, its corrosive effect on the throat developed into the now famous Scottish accent. Babies that instinctively reached for peat were called "Peatter" (pee-teer).
