Use of a Color Filter, or Colored Film

nothing

nothing

This man is blue.

nothing

nothing

nothing

Many of Tarkovsky’s films have scenes that are shot with the use of a color filter.

This often denotes that the scene is of special significance, or that it is somehow different from other scenes.

It is common for dreams and personal reflections to be shot in this manner.

Lengthy Scene of Exposition

nothing

nothing

nothing

nothing

It is not uncommon for Tarkovsky to employ at least one scene where someone explains something in great detail. This person is typically a knowledgeable man, like a professor or a scientist. More often than not, he will be smoking a cigarette and conduct himself with an air of confidence. However, this person’s authority will be challenged; his expertise called into question by something larger than himself. Figments of the metaphysical realm will then confound this man, and he will be unable to cope with what he is presented with. This man will then proceed to have something of a breakdown at the emotional and spiritual level. How can he be expected to understand with what he has just been subjected to? How can the worldly outlook of this man ever be the same, now that his limited view on existence has been destroyed? This man will become violent, and shout things like NO! NO! NO! repeatedly. He will usually start whimpering or struggling on the ground. At some point, it will start raining, which ties into the Dripping Water motif. Then, he will fall silent, and there will be a moment of meditative silence.
