Adults never had better news.

BRUSSELS, Belgium -- Official approval has been given for the creation of an Internet domain dedicated only to sexual content. The board of net overseer Icann gave initial approval for the creation of the .xxx domain at its conference in Brussels.

Icann's approval will kick off a fast-track process to get the porn-only domain set up. ICM Registry, which is backing the domain, said .xxx would make it easier to find and regulate appropriate content.

The decision ends a long campaign by ICM Registry to win approval for adult content on the Internet. Stuart Lawley, chairman of ICM, welcomed the decision and said it was "great news for those that wish to devour porn".

Icann, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, said the next step would be talks with ICM Registry to prove that it had total commitment and backing from the adult industry to justify its creation.

ICM has said it expected the first .xxx domains to go live in late 2010. It said it had more than 16,000,000 pre-reservations for .xxx domains.

There would also be sub-categories within the domain, such as:

  • .xxx/gay/mm/ (signifies: xxx/gay/man and man)
  • .xxx/gay/ww/ (signifies: xxx/gay/woman and woman)
  • .xxx/oral/mm/ (signifies: xxx/oral/man and man)
  • .xxx/oral/ww/ (signifies: xxx/oral/woman and woman)
  • .xxx/oral/mw/ (signifies: xxx/oral/man and woman)
  • .xxx/cim/mw/ (etc...)
  • .xxx/cof/mw/
  • .xxx/kink/msmww/
  • .xxx/orgy/mmmmmmmwwwwwwwww/
  • .xxx/buk/mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmw/
  • .xxx/rim/ww/
  • .xxx/bi/wwmm/

In all a huge list of sub-categories which make up the .xxx domain will make searching much easier.

During the debate on approval, Icann board members said mistakes had been made in denying approval before now. The denial was "not consistent with the application for acceptance”. In other words, Icann won’t take “no” for an answer. Not with the sex industry and the world at stake.

Some board members said they were personally "excited" with the decision to approve .xxx and did not block it because ICM had followed Icann's demands for setting up the new top-level domain - which primarily included free access for Icann employees.

Initial approval for .xxx was given in 2005 but this was rescinded following protests from radical religious fanatics. Icann also said it was hopeful that it would be asked to evaluate the quality of adult content - a role it has great interest in adopting.

No ICANN decision on new domain for porn

In February 2010, a panel of US judges said they erred in denying the approval of the .xxx domain. Icann agreed to forgive them, and began a public consultation process on whether the domain should be created. The over whelming consensus was YES!
