Star Wars Resistance is an American animated science fiction television series created by Dave Filoni, set in the Star Wars Universe. It follows Kazuda Xiono, a New Republic pilot turned Resistance spy, as the threat of the First Order (or Empire 2.0) emerges. The series starts shortly before The Force Awakens and ends before The Rise of Skywalker, connecting the whole sequel trilogy together — which would have been great, had people actually watched the show.

It also serves as Filoni's third animated venture in the Star Wars galaxy. His first show, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which is widely accepted as "peak Star Wars", was cancelled in 2014 when Disney purchased Lucasfilm from Jedi Grand Master George Lucas. After the buy out, Filoni was forced to downgrade his animation to create Star Wars Rebels. After Rebels ended in 2018, Filoni was once again forced to make an even shittier show with an even worse animation style. This was, of course, Star Wars Resistance. Thankfully, it ended after only two seasons, as Disney saw the error in their ways and allowed Filoni to finish off The Clone Wars season seven, which was released in 2020 with its original animation style but even better. Afterwards, Disney stopped making Filoni having to use eye bleeding kids cartoon animation, and allowed for Star Wars: The Bad Batch and Tales of the Jedi to use the beloved, gritty style which was first seen in 2008.

Cast and characters[edit]

Main cast
  • Christopher Sean as Kazuda Xiono: a young pilot for the New Republic who becomes a resistance spy.
  • Josh Brener as Neeku Vozo: a Nikto technician.
  • Scott Lawrence as Jarek Yeager: the owner of Yeager's Repairs.
  • Suzie McGrath as Tamara Ryvora: a mechanic and pilot. Not a Morrison, though.
  • Justin Ridge as R1-J5: an old astromech droid with a beard that wears a helmet despite its head already being made of metal.
Guest stars
  • Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron: first of many live action characters to turn animated.
  • Dave Filoni as Bo Keevil: another X-Wing pilot character portrayed by Filoni, but unlike Trapper Wolf from The Mandalorian, Bo Keevil is animated!
  • Elijah Wood as Jace Rucklin: Frodo Baggins but in space.
  • Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma: that silver stormtrooper that was just there in Force Awakens, but animated.
  • Domhnall Gleeson as General Hux: rude and ginger. Also another character from the films.
  • Anthony Daniels as C-3PO: because 3PO just needs to be in everything Star Wars.
  • Carolyn Hennesy as Princess Leia Organa: Carrie was busy fishing.
  • Tzi Ma as Senator Hamato Xiono: Kazuda's father and senator of the New Republic. Same character from Ahsoka, but older (as this is set after but released before).
  • Matthew Wood as Kylo Ren: the battle droids take over as the Supreme Leader of the First Order.
  • Sam Witwer as Hugh Sion: as is the case with C-3PO, Witwer is also involved in everything.

Production[edit]

After coming up with the basic plot of the show, as well as writing the first episode, Dave Filoni buggered off to work on Star Wars: The Clone Wars season 7, leaving people who had no idea how to run a show in charge.

Reception[edit]

With Resistance being one of the few things that even the most die hard fans refuse to watch, reviews and ratings are very biased. The average viewer, being aged below ten, always speaks highly of the show, citing the "cool flying ships" and "Kylo Ren being an absolute badass." Because of this, the first season has a rating of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics — many of whom were forced to watch the show with their young children, and didn't even watch the show themselves but gave a high score since it's Star Wars and "has to be good, right?" Luckily, its casual score, a 6.7/10, redeems the high praise. Not because people didn't enjoy the show, as how do you enjoy something you haven't watched? But because the rating is actually scoring how much the animation style sucks.

Emily Ashby of Common Sense Media stated that the "downplaying of cartoon violence" really hurt the shows potential, but "after four seasons of Rebels skinny lightsaber duels, at least the space dogfights were watchable." Additionally, after the massive flop of season two, a third season set after the events of The Rise of Skywalker was scrapped so that nobody had to live in a galaxy were Rey Palpatine was a Skywalker. And also so that Dave Filoni could focus all his time into the poorly written live-action series.
