Forum:It don't gotta be funny
Well, I got one bug out of my ass with the "Duck!" thing. Here's the other one.
I'm under the impression that this is at least partly a satirical site. If that's true, it should follow that contributions don't necessarily have to make you laugh to be worthy of, say, featuring.
I hate it when people trot out dictionary definitions, but Merriam Webster defines satire as
1 : a literary work holding up human vices and follies to ridicule or scorn
and
2 : trenchant wit, irony, or sarcasm used to expose and discredit vice or folly
I think the best satire is often not funny because the nature of the subject matter is too sad. It disappoints me to keep seeing people voting against excellent satire (I'm not referring to my rubbish, I hasten to add) because they don't find it funny. -- Sir Armando Perentie KUN FP 11:40, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
- Maybe someone should create How to be satirical and not just funny? -- Mitch 12:00, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
- Aha! But I don't think it's lack of satire that's the problem; rather a lack of appreciation of it -- Sir Armando Perentie KUN FP 12:04, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
- Cat's Cradle wasn't hilarious at some points (Kurt Vonnegut book) but it was an excellent satire!--Witt, of UNion Entertain me* 13:23, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
- As a user who, when writing, occasionally ascends the lofty peak of Mount Satire, only to trip at the top, roll down the other side and get stuck in the crevasse known as "too on the nose" I...have lost my train of thought. So there! Or, if you would prefer coherence; there is a place for it here. I've got a room out back. It's a little bit drafty, but it's got a great view...of the dumpster. Also, read this.
- Warning: The following could be construed as containing page whoring. It's not my fault; it happens to be at least vaguely on topic and, therefore, apropo. That, and it gives me a chance to say 'moot'. In closing, satire does have a place on Uncyc, just as long as that place is willing to put up with the occasional "I don't get it" and "I don't find this funny" when it reaches VFH. Currently, there's a "not funny" on one of mine, and I'm trying not to let it bug me. That the page it's talking about is not funny is moot, in my opinion.
