An Uncyclopedia Flash Animation Short... Good or Bad Idea?

I really don't know anything about creating a Flash animation so I don't know how difficult it is, what the process entails, if others think it's a good idea, nor if this site could support one. What I do know is that there are a slew of clever writers and artists here and I think an evolution to a new medium would be a potentially beneficial experiment. Maybe a thirty-second Uncyclopedia mockucommercial which could not only be played here, but at other sites as well, or just some original idea developed by something like the colonization.

What say you? -- Imrealized ...hmm? 16:33, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

I think there are licensing issues that would prevent that from happening, actually, since Macromedia owns all known Flash codecs — therefore redistribution of Uncyc content under the CC-BY-NC-SA license would also require redistribution of a proprietary codec (i.e., coder-decoder software). Apparently this isn't such an issue with .GIF - even though CompuServe owns the rights to the compression algorithm, the software rasterizers to display them are mostly open (and of course .PNG, .JPEG, and .OGG are all completely open). Uh, sorry if that was too technical... In theory, I guess we could try displaying Flash animations stored on external websites, though there are obvious drawbacks to that approach. (I'd try it now, but I'm just too lazy.)  c • > • cunwapquc? 16:59, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
As much as I would love to see Flash content on the site (I trained as a Multimedia Designer) I fear that the site would end up like an uglier brother of ebaum's world. Flash currently isn't supported on Uncyclopedia, although on my own Wiki I have used the Flash Tag to allow it, so I know it is possible. -- Sir Mhaille Icons-flag-gb.png (talk to me)
There's nothing stopping anybody creating something and putting it on YouTube or Google Video. Personally I think some sort of viral video would be a great way to help 'spread the word' about Uncyc, perhaps in a sort of documentary style, as you mention. As a development, why not video clips? You know, like a doco about handguns. -- Hindleyite 18:23, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
btw are "embedded" YouTube links legal here? i ask 'cos i haven't seen one in any article. or is it that folks don't use it simply 'cos of it's big "embedded" screen? -- mowgli 06:03, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

  • I think this may be the right time and place to speak about an idea I had at some point (point and laugh if someone has already suggested it). UnNews Video. It would be like UnNews Audio, exept Zim would wear a ski mask, and read the news from behind a desk. We could spread it on the wiki the same way the we spread UnNews Audio files, but Zim (or any other brave soul who attempts this) could upload it to YouTube or Google Video at their own discression. This way we could spread around the Uncyc, laugh at Zim, and honor great UnNews articles. What you say? --Brigadier General Sir Zombiebaron 17:45, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

UnMeta; a solution to this problem?

Why not just change the license over at UnMeta so that UnMeta can have Flash? UnMeta isn't run by Wikia so that could help. Or maybe some Uncyclopedians could start our own Newgrounds crew or something. --Nerd42Talk 18:16, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

The <flash> extension is available on UnMeta, although I haven't tried uploading an .swf to see how it reacts to her (an SWF is a single white female, no?). I don't think that the codecs have to exist on the server itself, although the flash code will be useless to anyone who doesn't have a flash player installed on their webbrowser.

.GIF is likely not proprietary anymore (the patents in question presumably being part of the LZ77,LZ78,LZW series of compression algorithms) Some of those used to be patented by Rockwell for use in compression within error-correcting modems but the patents have long since expired. .SWF is still proprietary, so there aren't any open-source, free players for her. --Carlb 03:47, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

In responce to Nerd42: I acctaully have a Newgrounds account. Unless they've deleted it. --Brigadier General Sir Zombiebaron 17:33, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

Buy off Newgrounds!!!!

“The kitten huffers of the future, today!”

I suggest that we should throw a buttload of cash at Tom Fulp and take over Newgrounds. So, rather than make all the flash clips ourselves, we can simply relax and enjoy the pleasure of having clans and clans of enthusiasts going through all that trouble for us. Want to see a new Clock Crew with Sophia taking the lead? Or perhaps Oscar Wilde driving the Newgrounds tank? It's your call!

I have got AU$20 in my pocket by the way.

  • If we ever make an animation for Newgrounds, we should have Oscar driving the tank on the loadpage. And we should change "Newgrounds" to "Zombiebaron is the awesomest ape I know" "Ungrounds" (or something like that). --Brigadier General Sir Zombiebaron 17:32, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

Nukedgrounds? --66.102.74.161 19:17, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

UnGrounds - that's it! We should make our own Flash portal that is a parody of Newgrounds - the way that Uncyclopedia parodies Wikipedia. --Nerd42Talk 19:39, 9 September 2006 (UTC)
