It doesn't look like he needs new teeth.

LONDON, United Kingdom -- Scottish actor David Tennant, who portrayed the Tenth Doctor in Doctor Who, has now returned to the show as the Fourteenth Doctor — so that he can afford to get a new set of teeth.

"The folks at BBC asked if I wanted to do the whole doctoring thing again," Tennant said. "At first I said no, but then I realised that if I were going to be an actor, I'd need some good-looking teeth. I took the job so I can go to the dentist and get a new pair."

Tennant, who last played the Doctor in 2013, surprised viewers watching Jodie Whittaker's version of the character in her final episode when, instead of regenerating into the gay black kid from Sex Education, she instead transformed into David Tennant, which the writers described as an "epic plot twist". In an interview, Matt Smith, who took over as the Eleventh Doctor, described landing the gig:

“ Yeah, it was weird at first. 'Cause David, he had such bad teeth, and here I was with my perfect set of munchers replacing him. It didn't make much sense, but I think the audience greatly appreciated it as they didn't have to see his horrible teeth anymore. ”

Tennant's return as the Doctor comes as Boris Johnson seeks to reprise his comedy role as British Prime Minister (now abandoned) and Donald Trump's tease about morphing from "Impeach 45" to "Impeach 47" (still pending).

Tennant's new pearly whites, which cost him "a season's worth of Doctor Who money", could be for nothing, however. As after John Krasinski was fan-cast as Mr. Fantastic in the 2022 film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, those who have read the discount Harry Potter novel series, Skulduggery Pleasant, have called for any film adaptation to cast Tennant as the title character. If Tennant were to play the magic skeleton detective, he would most likely be a CGI character that will have no need for teeth — due to being a skeleton.

However, bloggers on Fandom's Doctor Who website — who grudgingly accepted both a female Doctor (Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth) and a black Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth, who might fit the part if he wears an overcoat in the summer) — warn that the entire franchise could be put at risk if it strains fan credulity with a Doctor who is an Englishman with good teeth.
