BOISE, Idaho -- Major employer Maximus gave notice that 1,500 employees will lose their jobs next month. The layoffs could drive up unemployment in Ada County from 3.2% to 3.7%. The rest of the country would do anything to have even that higher unemployment rate — except move to Idaho.
Maximus opened a call center here in 2013 to answer questions from citizens throughout the U.S. about the President's new health care law. UnNews expects that the White House would say that the closing means there is no one left who is confused about the law, even though Professor Jonathan Gruber admitted last month that the confusion was deliberate to sneak the law through Congress. That is why we no longer ask them.
Maximus has gone through waves of hiring and firing before, which it says are routine, given that every year the law provides a very-last-chance to sign up for Obama-care insurance and avoid penalties, which are really taxes. The insurance provides enviable coverage, including Alcoholism Counseling, Gender Conversion, and Pediatric Dental for the childless, at premiums lower than anywhere else, given that "anywhere else" would be illegal. Free abortions are included too, though policyholders must make out a separate $1 check, because it would be wrong for government to pay for abortions.
After the first annual push, Maximus laid off workers, who sued Maximus, claiming they thought the jobs were permanent or that they thought the jobs would pay overtime. Maximus said the employees only sued them as practice for eventually suing their doctor to get care. Maximus also has to comply with state procedures for layoffs, which are almost as burdensome as those to offer a job in the first place. The procedures enabled the Idaho Department of Labor to coordinate Job Fairs for the former employees, where it let them eat cake. Maximus continued advertising work on its website, to keep interest high in case it should once again actually offer jobs.
The call center was in Building 8 of the Hewlett-Packard campus. The printer manufacturer presumably had already given up. Maximus said it is supporting ex-workers who claim to be Permanently Unable to Work, as Maximus itself, and America, may do soon.
